I once heard he had syphilis which resulted in horrendous high pitch sounds in his ear. This drove him nuts which resulted in him cutting off his ear out of desperation. Not sure if its true tho. But seems more plausible than cutting your ear off out of loneliness. He might have been a bit crazy, but not that bonkers.
