Located in the pacific ocean just east of Papua New Guinea, the archipelago of The Solomon Islands is a fairly unknown sovereign state of which not many might have heard. It might surprise some, that of all places, The Solomon Islands are home to one of the most intriguing stories in the world.

This is the story of the Guadalcanal Giants, often known by the locals as ‘Moo-Moo’. The stories concerning the giants started to gain traction in the rest of the world when Australian engineer Marius Boirayon started to document the tales he was hearing from the local people. The local population all seem aware of the fact that they are sharing their land with these mysterious beings. Even local newspapers publish items concerning these so-called ‘Moo-Moo’. Among the many islands of the country countless stories exist. Most of them terrifying.

Among the Islanders, one of the most eerie stories related to the giants is the story of ‘Mango’; fifty years ago a girl named Mango was taken by the giants. After twenty-five years, being believed dead and never to be seen again, Mango reappears, in an unrecognisable and shocking state. Mango is found to be pregnant and believed to have been taken as a wife by one of the giants for over two decades. She gave birth to a half-breed boy who was killed by one of Mango’s brothers at the age of five. Mango herself remained in a severe unstable mental state until her death. According to the story, some of the men on the island are aware of the location where her son is buried.

The dense jungle in The Solomon Islands

This is just one of the many, many stories concerning the giant inhabitants of the jungles in the archipelago. As one can see with a quick glance at any map online, the interior of the larger islands of the archipelago are almost totally uninhabited. The inland of the islands consist of thick jungle covering high mountainous slopes, impenetrable for any men or women that would try. These jungles are also some of the most biologically isolated ecosystems in the world, and frequently new species of wildlife are discovered in these forests. If, somewhere in the world, a population of tall forest dwellers would live, the isolated rainforests of The Salomon Islands might be that place.

In his documents, Boirayon states that the local population is not aware of the global significance the official discovery of the giants would have. For them it is a part of their lives and it has been for as long as they and their stories remember.

The stories of giants and mysterious forest dwellers have gone back for as long as human beings have roamed this earth. Sightings and stories keep emerging as time goes on, even in remote archipelagos such as The Solomon Islands. As strange and unbelievable as it might seem, the curiosity of modern human beings have kept these stories alive. Is it all truth or fiction? As history has thought us; sometimes the truth really is stranger than fiction.
